It is amazing how there can be so many beautiful temples buried deep within the cityscape.  The Sri Mariamman Temple was built in 1827 and is the city’s oldest Hindu temple.  It features a tower densely ornamented with deities and is absolutely stunning to look at all the statues.

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is a Tang Dynasty-style temple housing religious relics and has ornate rooms.

Thian Hock Keng is one of the oldest and most important Hokkien temple in Singapore. It was visited by Chinese immigrants giving thanks to Ma Zu (Goddess of the Sea) for their safe voyage.

In 1839, under the leadership of Mr Tan Tock Seng and Mr Si Hoo Keh, the Hokkien clan built the temple in Telok Ayer Street. It also housed the clan’s office and served as a meeting venue. The construction of Thian Hock Keng was completed in 1842.

  5. I especially liked seeing the interiors of the temples. Are there any customs you need to observe when entering? I also thought it interesting that the temples only date back to the 1800s. I think Singapore was an undeveloped fishing village until then. I guess it’s grown!

    1. Singapore is celebrating its’ 50th year as an official independent nation next month. For one of the smaller shrine rooms I had to wear a serong and for the Hindu temple I had to take my shoes off.

  6. Once again we see beautiful contrasts between the old and the new. Colors are great… then seeing the dragons and atop some buildings people sitting around (wonderful statues ).
    Temples galore…mosaics so expertly done.
    The temple interiors in photos make us feel as though we too are there .
